There are 3 categories of water causing damage:

• Category 1 consists of clean water from rainwater, sink or steam line and represents the lowest health risk. Areas damaged by category 1 water have the best potential for being salvaged.
• Category 2 consists of water from storm drain backups, surface water and discharges from equipment, and has a significant degree of contamination. Materials damaged by category 2 are more difficult to salvage and people who were exposed to this water are at a higher risk of disease or infection.
• Category 3 is highly contaminated water from sewers, surface water, rivers and ocean water. This water contains toxic materials such as viruses, bacteria and parasites.
